Spin Cycle Is Broken in a Kenmore 80 Series Washer

When your Kenmore 80 Series washing machine won’t spin, it may be a sign something is wrong with either the power supply or the way the machine was loaded at the beginning of the cycle. Troubleshoot and fix your washing machine as soon as you notice a problem, or you may end up with a much larger pile of dirty laundry to tackle when it is fixed.
  1. Power Supply

    • An interruption in the power supply could be a reason for the spin cycle not to work. Press the “Start/Pause” button of your washing machine, and move the machine enough for you to reach the power cord. Make sure that the power cord is tightly connected to the outlet, as it could have been pulled loose due to energetic children or pets playing where they shouldn’t. If everything is connected correctly, check the corresponding fuses or breakers for any trips.

    Incorrect Cycle

    • Check to make sure that you placed the washing machine on the correct cycle. If you placed it on “Handwash,” it will spin very gently in order to protect delicate fabrics. This spin cycle makes it appear it isn’t spinning. There is also a “No Spin” option under the “Spin Speed” section of the control panel. Press the “Spin Speed” button to change to a different spin speed. Immediately before the spin cycle begins, the washing machine will pause to switch gears, drain the water and reduce excessive suds. This period of inactivity usually takes several minutes.

    Unbalanced Load

    • If the load is too heavy or unbalanced, it could cause the spin cycle not to start. The Kenmore 80 Series comes with a weight sensor that triggers if it senses that the load is too heavy. If you suspect the load is unbalanced, press the “Start/Pause” button and rearrange the items in the washing machine so they are distributed more evenly. To prevent an unbalanced load, wash large items, such as blankets, curtains or comforter, with smaller items to even out the load.

    Open Lid

    • Make sure the lid or door of the washing machine is tightly closed. Kenmore 80 series washers are programmed to stop just before the spin cycle if the door or lid is open. This is to prevent water from escaping during the spin cycle. Open the lid or door and shut it tightly before restarting the cycle.
