How to Change the Clutch in a Whirlpool Ultimate Care

The Whirlpool Ultimate Care Washer provides many years of clothes washing functionality if it is properly maintained and cared for. But even the best care can't prevent moving parts from wearing out after long-term use. If the washer fails to agitate, spin, drain water or becomes especially noisy, the clutch assembly may be to blame. Replacing the clutch assembly is a fairly simple procedure and takes about an hour to complete. The clutch assembly part comes with installation instructions and photos to make the process simpler.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the machine. Drain the water, if necessary. Disconnect the hoses from the back of the machine. Take the cap off the agitator and unscrew the bolt from the top of the agitator inside the machine. Remove the plastic agitator and set it aside. The motor and gear case can be accessed through the bottom of the machine, so tip the washer on its back.

    • 2

Disconnect the wire harness. Remove the bolts from the motor and gear case with the socket wrench. There will be three to five bolts total. The entire assembly will slip out of the bottom of the washer in one piece once the bolts are removed.

    • 3

Lay the new parts out so that you can see what you are replacing. Start at the top of the gear shaft and remove the pieces, laying them out in the order you remove them. Substitute the new pieces for the old pieces as you take them off until all the new pieces are used.

    • 4

Replace the parts you removed in the reverse order from how you took them off, using the new pieces in place of the old ones. Slide the assembly back in place under the machine. Replace the bolts and reattach the wire harness.

    • 5

Tip the machine upright and replace the agitator. Screw the top back into place. Reconnect the hoses and plug in the washer.
