My GE Washer Is Leaking On Extra Large Loads

Washing machines need to be water tight to prevent leaks from occurring while the wash and spin cycles are running. Extra large loads put extra pressure on the washer, since the water is running directly at the washer lid in the case of top-loading washers, or right against the seal on a front-loading washer. Overfilling, as well as leaking from the front or top of the machine, is often due to faulty parts or poor installation of the washing machine.
  1. Overfilling

    • Overfilling may cause the washer to leak when extra large loads are in the machine. A pressure switch hose runs along the outer tub of the machine. When water gets to the correct level in the machine, air is pushed up inside the hose, which causes a diaphragm to flip up, shutting off the water. If the hose is clogged, you will need to blow compressed air into it to remove the clog.

    Seal

    • A boat seal is located between the door of your GE washer and the tub of the machine on front-loading washers. The boat seal should be supple and free of cracking or dry spots. If the seal is broken, you need to remove the housing of the washer, the door and finally the seal. This is not a simple repair and differs between machines. Take the washer to a certified GE technician to have the seal replaced.

    Level Machine

    • A top-loading washing machine may leak from the top during large loads if the machine is not installed on a level surface, or if the washing machine legs are not even. Place a spirit level on top of the machine to check whether it is level. Adjust the legs of the machine by turning the legs with a wrench until both feet are even.

    Redistribute Load

    • Different GE machines have different load capacities. Filling a machine over the capacity limit will not only cause the machine to leak, it may cause damage to the motor. Read the instruction manual for your unit to determine the load capacity for your machine. Do not overfill.
