The Inside of My Washing Machine Is Dripping

A dripping washing machine does not mean you need to buy a replacement or even have a repairman come to your house to fix the machine. You may repair the leaks yourself for the cost of only the replacement parts, which costs significantly less than what you would pay a repairman. Before you begin, you should pour water down the nearby floor drain to check that it is not clogged, causing the water on the laundry room floor.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Move the washing machine far enough away from the wall that you can fit behind it while crouching. Do not disconnect the machine’s power cord or the water supply hoses, because you need to run the machine while you are behind it.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the access panel on the back side of the washing machine. Place the panel and the screws in a safe location, away from the floor drain in the laundry room.

    • 3

Turn the machine’s dials to any wash setting you desire, and begin filling the tub with water. Examine the inside of the machine with your flashlight to locate the source of the leak. If you cannot see a leak, move the machine’s dial to the agitate portion of the cycle, and look inside the machine for leaks again.

Remove any leaking hoses inside the machine by pinching the clip on the end of the hose with a pair of hose-clamp pliers. Empty the leftover water inside the hose into a nearby bucket. Slide a new hose that is an exact match in place of the old one, but with hose clamps on the ends that you tighten using a screwdriver.

Turn the bolts holding the pump, if it is the source of the leak, counterclockwise to loosen the belt on the pump, and slide the belt off. Remove the bolts, and pinch the clips on the hoses connected to the pump using pliers to remove the hoses. Pull the pump from the machine and install an exact replacement, reversing the steps you took to remove the old pump.

Run the machine again to check for leaks. Replace the access panel in the back of the machine, and tighten the screws that hold it in place. Slide the machine back into its regular spot.
