How to Disassemble a Washing Machine Water Pump

A washing machine water pump re-circulates the water in the tub during the agitate and rinse cycles. It then pumps the water from the drain at the end of both spin cycles. The two chambers on the pump perform different functions. One chamber is responsible for pumping water out of the drain; the other re-circulates the water. You may need to disassemble and repair your water pump if water is leaking from underneath your washing machine onto the floor.
  1. Preparation

    • Before you begin to disassemble the water pump, get as much water out of the tub as possible. Turn the washing machine to the drain cycle and let it run. Unplug the unit so you don’t electrocute yourself. Lay old blankets down around the machine to keep water from penetrating your floor.

    Access to Water Pump

    • To give yourself more room to work, pull the unit away from the wall by disconnecting the hoses from the machine. To get to the water pump, remove the access panel on the back of the unit, then remove the coupler with the required tool.

    Tools

    • Disassembling the water pump requires only a few basic tools, including a standard screwdriver to remove the access panel; a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the screws that hold the water pump coupler in place; and a clamp pliers and socket wrench to remove and disassemble the pump.

    Disassembly

    • Slide the water pump hose clamps back with pliers. Take note of which hose connects to which chamber and be prepared for water to leak from the hoses. Remove the hoses once you're sure you know how to reassemble them. Then remove the three screws that hold the pump to the bottom of the tub.
