How to Change a Dryer Whip

Unlike the other appliances in your home, you must change the whip on the clothes dryer to match the outlet in the wall. In the late 1990s, the national building codes changed to ensure that dryer outlets are installed with a ground. Depending on the builder and the age of the home, the dryer outlet installed in the laundry room is either a four-prong or three-prong whip compatible outlet.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the back of the dryer to locate the terminal block access panel. The original dryer cord will enter the back of the dryer next to the panel. Remove the screws on the panel and remove the panel from the dryer.

    • 2

Loosen the three screws on the terminal block holding the original whip to the dryer. If you are removing a four-prong whip, you must loosen the green-colored grounding screws along the edge of the terminal block opening.

    • 3

Pull the original dryer whip’s wire connectors from beneath the screws on the terminal block and the green-colored screw.

    • 4

Loosen the two screws on the squeeze connector holding the original whip to the dryer body. The whip threads through the connector on the back of the dryer. Pull the original dryer whip from the dryer.

    • 5

Thread either a new three-prong or four-prong dryer whip through the squeeze connector. Attach the white, or center wire, on the new whip to the center screws on the terminal block.

    • 6

Connect the red wire from the whip to the screw to the right of left of the white wire. Connect the black wire from the whip to the remaining screw on the terminal block. Connect the green wire from the dryer whip to the green-colored grounding screw on the body of the dryer if you are installing a four-prong dryer whip.

    • 7

Tighten the screws to hold the new whip to the terminal block. Replace the terminal block cover onto the back of the dryer. Tighten the two screws on the squeeze connector to secure the new whip to the dryer.
