How to Dehumidify a Dryer Exhaust

The exhaust piping connected to your home dryer removes heat from the appliance during the drying process and disperses it safely outside through an opening near the appliance. The heat-dispersing process is intended to eliminate heat without causing moisture buildup, but your dryer's exhaust may be clogged if moisture occurs while using the appliance. Lint accumulates in the dryer's exhaust when the lint filter is no longer able to catch clothing fibers and must be cleaned to prevent extensive dryer damage and exposure to mold due to moisture buildup.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the power button on the front of the control panel to turn off the dryer. Unplug the power cord from the electric outlet.

    • 2

Wait for the dryer to cool down before touching the exhaust duct. The exhaust duct remains warm for up to one hour after the dryer is turned off and can cause personal injury if touched while hot.

    • 3

Cover your hands with gardening gloves to protect against sharp edges on the dryer.

    • 4

Pull the end of the exhaust duct from the wall opening. Scoop out lint clogs from the end of the dryer exhaust and pull out clogs from the wall opening's connection.

    • 5

Wipe the inside of the exhaust duct and the wall's exhaust connection with a damp cloth.

    • 6

Insert the exhaust duct back onto the exhaust connection on the wall. The exhaust duct clicks into place when securely attached to the wall's exhaust connection.

    • 7

Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet to restore power to the appliance.

    • 8

Open the dryer's door and pull out the lint screen. The lint screen is found on the bottom of the dryer door's opening. To clean, rub your hand against the screen to remove lint.

    • 9

Insert the lint screen into the dryer's door opening and close the door.
