How to Change the Door Seal Around a Samsung Front-Load Washing Machine

Samsung, like many other manufacturers, obtains many of its parts from third-party manufacturers. The door seals on its front-load washing machines are no exception. These flexible door seals often last a long time; however, wear and tear from hot, soapy water and repetitive use often leaves them cracked and worn out. When this happens, you may notice water leaking from the washer door. Fortunately, many do-it-yourselfers may be able to save some money by replacing the seal themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine from its power source and move the machine away from the wall.

    • 2

Remove the screws connecting the top panel to the back of the machine with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the top panel from the machine by pulling it back and up.

    • 3

Pull out the dispenser drawer located at the upper left side of the machine. Once it is pulled out all the way, reach your hand into the back and release the clip, allowing you to remove the drawer completely.

    • 4

Remove the three screws inside the dispenser drawer slot, along with the two screws connecting the top of the control panel to the machine.

    • 5

Press in the tabs located behind the top of the control panel. Pull the control panel out of its slot and move it out of the way. However, make sure not to remove any wires.

    • 6

Open the washing machine door. Take a pair of needle-nose pliers and place the tip between the door flange and the bottom part of the door seal. Pull out the wire clamp and spring. These are used to secure the door seal. Peel the door seal from the lip of the front panel. Work your way slowly around the seal until it is completely removed from the lip.

    • 7

Remove the light and door glass rinse tube from the door seal if your model has these connected to the seal. Use a pair of channel pliers to remove the clamp surrounding the rinse tube to easily remove the tube from its slot.

    • 8

Lift up the washing machine and place a heavy block or other support structure under the front corner. Let the machine rest on the block to give you easy access to the bottom of the machine.

    • 9

Remove the four screws connecting the bottom of the front panel to the machine. Take away the block and slowly lower the washer to the floor.

    • 10

Remove the screws from the top of the front panel. Lift the front panel up and out to detach it from the rest of the machine. Disconnect the front panel wire harness and set the panel aside.

    • 11

Take out the old door seal along with the spring clamp and discard. Prepare the new door seal by lubricating the groove with dishwashing liquid. Line up the pointer of the new door seal with the tab of the tub lid. As you line everything up, make sure the door glass rim tube and the light tube are on top.

    • 12

Work the groove of the new door seal into the lip of the tub lid. Work your way slowly around the tub opening. Be aware that this may take some time.

    • 13

Place the spring clamp into the groove at the top of the seal. Start at the top and work your way around until it is completely in place. Use the provided spacers to keep the seal and spring clamp in place as you work the rest of the spring clamp into the groove. Remove the spacers when finished.

    • 14

Replace the front panel and reconnect it to the wiring harness. Line up the holes on the back of the front panel with the pins on the machine and press in firmly.

    • 15

Replace the screws on the top of the front panel. Lift the washer and place the block back underneath it. Replace the screws on the bottom of the front panel. Take away the block and place the washer back on the floor.

    • 16

Reconnect the door glass rinse tube and the light to the door seal. Line up the new door seal with the front panel and make sure it fits snugly. Secure the door seal with the wire clamp and spring. Close the washer door firmly.

    • 17

Reposition the control panel and snap it firmly into place. Screw in the screws on top of the control panel as well as those in the dispenser door opening. Replace the dispenser drawer in the opening. Reposition the top panel and push it firmly into place. Secure it with the screws in the back of the top panel.

    • 18

Plug in the washing machine and run a load to check for any possible leaks.
