How to Repair a Dryer With No Heat Ignitor

Like your home furnace, your clothes dryer uses an ignitor to fire the burner assembly. This ignitor doesn't produce a flame but rather heats to such a high temperature that the burners catch flame off its heat. This is a more modern and safe alternative to the pilot light. If your dryer is fine but the unit won't heat up, the ignitor is potentially the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your dryer unit and unplug it.

    • 2

Pull the end tabs off of the top control panel and insert a putty knife under the corners of the control panel. Pry up to pop the control panel off.

    • 3

Remove the screws at the base of the control panel using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 4

Slide the top panel of the dryer off.

    • 5

Pop the bottom front panel of your dryer (if there is one) off with the tip of a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 6

Unplug the wiring connected to the rear of the top front panel.

    • 7

Remove the screws on the top and corners of the front panel and remove it, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 8

Locate the metal burner tube in the dryer. It may be necessary to slide the drum out of the dryer in order to access the burner.

    • 9

Remove the screw holding the metal bracket in place at the base of the burner assembly. Remove the mounting bracket.

    • 10

Slide the new ignitor into the mounting bracket and fit the bracket over the burner.

    • 11

      Tighten the bracket mounting screw.

    • 12

Plug the male end of the wiring near the burner into the female end of the ignitor wiring harness.

    • 13

      Reassemble the dryer.
