Multi-Testers for the Repair and Troubleshooting of Dishwashers

Multi-testers, or ohm multimeters, measure the connectivity in voltages of almost any type of appliance that runs on electricity, including dishwashers. You can use one to test a dishwasher’s electrical wiring and uncover connectivity problems, as well as test whether a specific part that runs on electricity, such as a dishwasher’s water pump, is bad. In short, a multi-tester makes troubleshooting easier, so you can repair the problem quicker.
  1. How a Multi-Tester Works

    • A multi-tester can determine how easily electrical current flows through a dishwasher and other tested components. In this case, the electrical current is measured in ohms. The lower the resistance reading, the better the current flows and operates your dishwasher. Conversely, the higher the reading, the more apt that something is blocking the current’s flow, such as a shorted wire, thus preventing your dishwasher or one of its components from functioning correctly.

How to Troubleshoot a Dishwasher Circuitry Malfunction

    • Disconnect the dishwasher’s power at the household circuit breaker to prevent electrical shock. Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet and insert the plug’s two prongs into the multi-tester’s probes then connect the alligator clip on each probe to secure the device to the dishwasher’s plug. Hit the dishwasher’s "Start" button then look at the reading in the multi-tester’s display window. A reading of 2 or less indicates the motor start relay that operates the "Start" button is fine. An “L” reading or any number higher than 2 indicates that the "Start" button is bad and must be replaced.

    Component Test

    • You can perform a diagnostic test to verify that a dishwasher component, such as the water pump, motor or heater, is working properly much the same way as you tested the dishwasher’s circuitry. Locate the component that appears to be malfunctioning. Disconnect its two main wires. Insert the wires into the multi-tester probes and secure them in place with the alligator clips. If you get an “L” reading or one higher than what’s specified in the dishwasher's operating manual, the component is bad and must be changed out. Refer to the manual for further guidance or contact the manufacturer for clarification if needed.

    Considerations

    • Multi-testers are available from most appliance retailers, electronics and home improvement stores. A basic multi-tester costs about $20 as of 2011. In addition to performing a basic diagnostic test of your dishwasher, you can use the device on most appliances, including dryers, washing machines and refrigerators, in addition to batteries and circuits.
