How to Replace Frigidaire Rear Bearings

If your Frigidaire dryer is squeaking or making other noises only when it’s tumbling, it’s likely that there's a problem with the rear bearing assembly. The rear bearing is ball-and-socket part that uses a small ball bearing to help turn the drum. You can't repair a worn ball bearing, so you have to replace the rear bearing assembly to fix the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Prying tool
  • Nut driver
  • High-temperature grease

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the dryer at the circuit breaker or unplug the electric cord from the socket.

    • 2

Release the clips that secure the main dryer top, using a prying tool. Remove any screws holding the front panel on. Use the same method to release the clips that hold the front panel in place. Carefully set the top and the front panel aside, as both are still connected by wires to the dryer.

    • 3

Reach into the belt assembly under the drum. Remove the idler pulley with your left hand as you roll the belt off the motor pulley with your right hand. Lift the belt over the drum and, with a sharp pull upward, release the bearing. Move the drum out through the front of the dryer.

    • 4

Remove the screws that hold the rear bearing support to back of the dryer wall. Remove the rear bearing from the back of the support. Position a new bearing into the back of the support. Add a little high-temperature grease to lubricate it, if necessary.

    • 5

Reposition the drum in the unit. Place the belt over the drum and the pulleys. Snap the front panel back into its clips and replace any screws you removed. Snap the main top back into its clips. Restore power to the dryer.
