How to Replace Copper Conductors on a Dryer

An electric clothes dryer receives power through a user-attached power cord. This power cord contains spade terminal connectors that attach to electrical terminals at the back of the dryer. These terminal connectors are made of stamped copper and are permanently attached to the power cord. If the connectors become loose due to a frayed or damaged cord, you must replace the entire cord rather than attempting to reconnect or replace the terminal connectors themselves. Fortunately, replacing a dryer power cord requires only a few tools and the ability to match the colored wires to their respective electrical terminals on the dryer.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric dryer
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Replacement power cord
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet. Pull the dryer away from the wall to access the rear panel.

    • 2

Use the wrench to loosen and remove the electrical access panel bolts at the rear of the dryer. Remove the electrical access panel to expose the electrical terminals.

    • 3

Loosen the terminal retaining nuts until the spade terminal connectors become loose enough to remove from the electrical terminals. Gently pull the spade terminals free from the electrical terminals and dispose of the old electrical cord.

    • 4

Insert the spade terminal connector attached to the red wire – or the right-side wire, if you're using a three-prong cord – from the replacement electrical cord between the red electrical terminal and the terminal retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut so it holds this spade terminal connector snugly to the red (right-side) electrical terminal.

    • 5

Insert the spade terminal connector attached to the black wire – or left-hand wire, if you're using a three-prong cord – from the replacement cord between the black electrical terminal and the terminal retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut so it holds the spade terminal connector snugly to the black (left-side) electrical terminal.

Insert the spade terminal connector attached to the white wire – or center wire, if you're using a three-prong cord – from the replacement cord between the white electrical terminal and the terminal retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut so it holds this spade terminal connector snugly to the white (center) electrical terminal. If the replacement cord only has three wires, attach the ground strap to this center terminal before tightening the bolt.

Insert the spade terminal connector attached to the green wire from the replacement cord between the green grounding screw head and the dryer frame. Tighten the retaining nut so it holds this spade terminal connector snugly to the dryer frame. Skip this step if the replacement dryer cord only has three wires.

Replace the electrical access panel. Insert the access panel retaining bolts and tighten the bolts so the panel is held securely in place. Plug the dryer cord into the electrical outlet and test the dryer to verify that it works.
