My GE Dsxh43ga0ww Drum Is Loose

A loose drum on a General Electric (GE) Dsxh43ga0ww gas clothes dryer can be noisy. You may hear high-pitch screeches or squeals coming from the dryer during a routine drying cycle. Although clothes may still dry effectively, operating your dryer with a loose drum can cause more damage to the appliance. Since there are several reasons why a drum may have come loose, you may want to investigate the issue further to see if you can pinpoint the specific problem and then proceed with repair.
  1. Rollers

    • Rollers are small plastic or metal wheels that line the exterior of the drum on a GE dryer and allow it to turn more easily. There are usually two sets on each drum: one set in the front and another in the back that move along a narrow track. If even one wheel breaks, it can cause the drum to drop down in one area and rotate erratically. As more rollers wear, the drum may seem loose when you touch it and even appear lopsided. Remove the back panel of your dryer that’s held in place with screws. Slide off the top cover panel. Manually turn the drum, so you can visibly inspect each set of rollers. If you find one or more that are damaged, replace both sets.

    Glides

    • Glides are thin plastic covers that protect the rim of the metal drum and support it as it tumbles. Glides can split and crack apart with normal use of your dryer over time. When this happens, the drum stability may be jeopardized and you may notice the drum is looser than usual. Additionally, a worn glide may cause a drum to rub against the cabinet and squeal. Remove the front and top panels of your GE dryer to evaluate the glides for possible wear. Change them out if they appear damaged.

    Belt

    • The motor powers a rubber belt to turn and prop up the drum. When the belt is working properly, the drum turns consistently and steadily, but when it slips or breaks, the drum may become loose and rattle in the cabinet. Remove the back panel of the dryer. Give the belt a gentle tug. If the belt moves with little effort, it’s lost some of its elasticity and should be replaced.

    Idler Pulley Mechanism

    • The Dsxh43ga0ww dryer has an idler pulley mechanism that rotates in opposite direction of the belt to keep the belt taut. If the pulley breaks, the belt’s resistance can become compromised, and consequently the drum may loosen in the cabinet. Rather than turn evenly, it may wobble or tremble. Remove the front panel of the dryer; the idler pulley is located near the bottom dryer in front of the motor. It’s a wheel attached to a bracket and the belt should go under it. Turn the wheel manually with your hand to see whether or not it’s stiff. A stiff wheel usually requires replacement. Contact GE to schedule a service appointment.
