How to Install a Sheet Metal Dryer Pipe

Dryer vent pipes run from the back of the appliance and through an exterior wall before terminating outside the home in a vent cap. The vent pipe consists of a rigid sheet metal duct connected in sections. Installing the pipe requires only that you accurately measure the route and cut the metal pipe to size. In addition, you must cut a hole through the wall where the pipe exits the home and seal the area to prevent air and rain leaks.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the dryer in its installation location and look at the rear of it to locate the round metal opening, which is where the metal duct pipe attaches to. Mark the center of the round opening on the wall behind the dryer using a pencil and then pull the dryer out of the way to provide room to work.

    • 2

Install a 4 1/2-inch-diameter hole bit into a drill and don safety glasses. Center the bit over the mark on the wall and squeeze the drill’s trigger to cut an opening in the wall. Stop once you penetrate the wall cavity and then pull out the center circle cutout.

    • 3

Insert a long nail, approximately 5 to 6 inches, through the wall using a hammer. Walk outside and locate the nail from the exterior. Hammer the nail shaft back inside the wall gently and cut an identical hole over the location using the hole saw bit.

    • 4

Lay a piece of metal duct piping on the ground and measure it to the same length as the distance from the back of the dryer to the external wall opening. Wear gloves and cut the metal pipe where needed using aviation snips. If multiple sections of duct are necessary, snap the crimped ends together and secure them with foil tape.

    • 5

Insert the pipe through the wall until it aligns with the exterior of the home.

    • 6

Turn a vent hood with the open area pointing down and push it over the end of the pipe. Insert the provided screws into the vent hood using a power screwdriver.

    • 7

Apply a 1/8- to 1/4-inch bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter of the vent hood to seal it.

    • 8

Push the dryer back into the installation location and push the other end of the pipe over the rear opening on the dryer. Secure the edge of the pipe using more foil tape.
