How to Replace a Suspension Spring on a Top-Load Frigidaire Washer

Replacing a suspension spring on a top-load Frigidaire washing machine follows the same procedure as any other top-load machine. The primary difference is in the way the washing machine comes apart to make the repair. In this case, the disassembly of the Frigidaire washer is similar to the Whirlpool machine in the way they come apart. The suspension springs help to stabilize the washing machine so that when it spins, it does not jump all over the floor. When you replace a spring, it is best to replace all of them at one time so that they wear evenly. There are six suspension springs on the washing machine.

Unplug the electrical cord from the power supply before doing anything. Insert the putty knife between the gap between the top of the washer and the front panel. Pry up to release the retaining clips. Lift the top of the machine and rotate it on its hinges so that it rests on the wall behind the appliance.

Reach into the washer at the front, near the top and remove the two screws securing the front panel using a 5/16-inch nut driver. Lean the front panel forward and disengage it from the hooks at the bottom. Set the panel aside.

Put safety goggles on to prevent eye injuries in case the spring slips out of the channel-lock pliers. Grasp the upper part of the spring using a pair of channel-lock pliers and stretch it to remove it from the hook. These springs may be a little difficult to remove, so you want to grasp it tightly and pull straight up to release it from the eyelet. Once you release it from the eyelet at the top, rotate the spring to release the bottom from the frame. Repeat the procedure for all of the suspension springs.

Rotate the spring and grasp the top part with the channel-lock pliers. Pull up on the spring and hook it to the washtub. Repeat the procedure to install all of the suspension springs.

Lower the top of the washer down onto the frame and push firmly on the corners to lock the retaining clips. Plug the electrical cord into the power supply.
