How to Repair Lint Filters on Top Loading Washing Machines

Lint filters used in top-loading washing machines are located in the agitator below the fabric dispenser. If you notice lint, dirt or other types of debris getting onto your clothes, then you may have a broken or dirty lint filter. The lint filter is a small wire piece that catches lint in the washing machine, and this part can be manually removed from the agitator to be washed, repaired or replaced. New lint-filter parts can be ordered from the manufacturer of your washing machine or from an online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your washing machine away from the wall, and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Open the top-loading door of the washing machine, then pull out the fabric dispenser from the agitator. The agitator is the long plastic pole in the center of the washer.

    • 3

Pry off the agitator cap using a flathead screwdriver, if there's a cap on the agitator, for your washing-machine unit.

    • 4

Pull out the lint filter from the agitator. Run cold running water over the filter to remove lint or dust.

    • 5

Dry off the lint filter using a paper towel. Inspect the lint filter for damage, such as broken wires or cracked pieces.

    • 6

Stretch out the lint filter if it's slightly bent. If there's severe damage to the filter, then replace it with a new filter part.

    • 7

Insert the repaired filter or new lint-filter part into the agitator, then press down the agitator cap onto the top of the agitator so that it snaps into place.

    • 8

Reinsert the fabric dispenser into the agitator, then close the washing-machine door. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
