All Whirlpool gas dryers should be installed with an individual gas manual shutoff valve that is within 6 feet of the dryer. The gas connection can be used with 3/8-inch tubing for lengths under 20 feet if acceptable by local building codes and should be connected with 1/2-inch National Pipe Thread (NPT) pipe. A flexible stainless steel gas connector should be used with an elbow and a 3/8-inch flare by 3/8-inch NPT adapter fitting. Aluminum or copper tubing can be used with a 3/8-inch flare by 3/8-inch NPT adapter fitting.
The gas pipe that exits the rear of all Whirlpool gas dryers has a 3/8-inch male pipe thread. The dryer burner is ready for use at elevations of up to 10,000 feet above sea level. If the Whirlpool dryer is installed above 10,000 feet, a 4 percent reduction in the burner BTU rating should be made for each 1,000-foot elevation increase. Contact Whirlpool or another qualified professional for assistance.
Whirlpool gas dryers require a separate 15- or 20-amp circuit. Whirlpool recommends that a time-delay circuit breaker or fuse be used with the dryer and that the dryer is connected to a separate circuit. The electrical outlet must be located within 2 feet of the dryer when the appliance is installed. The dryer should be connected to a 120-volt, 60-Hz, AC-only electrical outlet that is grounded with three-prongs. Do not use an extension cord with the dryer and do not use an adapter when plugging in the dryer. In addition, note that the dryer will also need to be installed near a cold water faucet if the unit is a steam dryer.
Any time natural gas is used with a dryer or any other appliance, there is a risk of a gas leak, which can be a health hazard. If you smell gas coming from your Whirlpool dryer, turn off the appliance and leave the house immediately. Contact your gas company or emergency services for assistance.
