How to Build a Wooden Platform for a Clothes Dryer

Consumer clothes dryers tend to have doors that are low to the floor, unless you place the dryer on a platform to make clothes loading and retrieval easier. Most appliance makers now market matching pedestals that raise washers and dryers, but you can make your own. The platform needs to be a little wider and deeper than the dryer base is so that during the normal drying cycles, the machine's movement does not cause the dryer to tip off. The platform can be as simple as pine lumber construction, or you can paint it to match your laundry room.

  • Miter saw
  • Nail gun
  • 3/4-inch nails
  • 1-inch quarter-round trim
  • Latex exterior primer

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your dryer. Add 2 inches to each measurement to ensure your platform is 1 inch deeper and wider than the dryer that will sit on it.

    • 2

Cut four sections of 8-by-1-inch board with a circulating saw. Place the pieces on the floor in a square, alternating the ends so that each end overlaps the previous board’s end in a counter-clockwise square.

    • 3

Screw the ends together by sinking 2-inch wood screws from the right board into the left board, spacing each screw 2 inches apart, starting 1 inch from the ends, using three screws per end.

    • 4

Cut out one more section of 8-by-1-inch board that's 1 inch shorter than the length of the platform. Alternatively, you can measure the inside of the platform square on the floor and cut the board to that measurement.

    • 5

Slide the cut board into the middle of the squared boards, standing vertically from front to back. Screw it in place with 2-inch screws, through the outside of the squared boards. This board will add support to the middle section of the platform.

    • 6

Measure a section of 3/4-inch plywood to match the length and width of the squared boards. Cut along the measurement lines with a circular saw.

    • 7

Place a bead of wood glue along the top of the boards in the platform. Set the square of plywood on top evenly.

    • 8

Screw the top plywood into the base using 1¼-inch wood screws placed at each corner. Sink the screws 1/2-inch from the edge every 8 inches between the corners.

    • 9

Adorn the top of the sides with lengths of 1-inch square flat trim to cover over the edge of the plywood. Nail the trim in place using a nail gun and 3/4-inch nails after running a bead of wood glue on the underside of the trim.

    • 10

Use quarter-round wood trim along the bottom edge, cutting with a miter saw to fit. Run a bead of wood glue on the underside of the trim, then nail the trim in place with a nail gun.

    • 11

Paint the wood with exterior primer paint and then two coats of exterior latex paint to stand up to the moisture in the laundry room. Allow each coat to dry according to the paint manufacturer’s directions before applying the next coat, and wait at least 48 hours after the final coat before setting the dryer on the platform.
