How Do I Repair the Pump on a Kenmore HE Side Load Washer?

The drain pump is responsible for removing water from the washing machine and pumping it into your household plumbing. The pump is used at least once during each wash so dirty water doesn't linger among the clothes. You might find your Kenmore HE washer displays an error code if it can't properly drain away water. Accessing and repairing common pump problems is relatively straightforward and requires minimal disassembly of the appliance.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power supply by unplugging the power cord and turning off the hot and cold water shut-off valves. To access the drain pump remove the three screws along the bottom front edge of the appliance and pull the toe cover downward and outward. The pump is the white plastic part with a twist cap on the front.

    • 2

Turn the twist cap counterclockwise and pull; the debris filter comes free from the drain pump. Brush out any accumulation of lint or tangled threads trapped in the filter. Clean any remaining dirt out of the filter with warm soapy water in the kitchen sink and twist the filter back into place.

Lift up the black plastic cover on the right side of the pump to access the wiring connections. Make sure the plastic harness beneath the cover is firmly attached so the computer can properly communicate with the drain pump. Look for any signs of corroded wiring.

    • 4

Locate the black pipe running from the tub to the pump and make sure the metal clamp holding it in place is securely fastened; water will leak out of this connection if the clamp -- which can be opened with a pinch from a pair of pliers -- is not properly attached.

    • 5

Find the white pipe running from the pump to the outlet hose on the back of the washer. Like the black hose, ensure it's properly clamped in position and that no water is leaking out. Be sure to lay down a towel if you disconnect either pipe – trapped water will spill onto the floor.

Confirm that all three orange rubber grommets holding the pump to the bottom of the washer are firmly attached. The pump might report an error if the connections have worked loose or become corroded.
