Do Integrated Washers and Dryers Differ in Size?

Though all integrated washers and dryers exist for the same basic purpose – to save space – manufacturers produce units that differ in a number of ways, including the size. Thus, some models will save you more space than others. Size differences include dimensions and capacity.
  1. Integrated Washer and Dryer

    • An integrated washer and dryer is a relatively compact individual unit that resembles a front-loading dryer and both washes and dries clothes. Integrated washers and dryers come in various colors and designs, depending upon the manufacturer. Integrated washers and dryers easily fit into spaces occupied by standard washers and dryers. An integrated unit may be especially beneficial if you live in a condo or apartment because the unit can fit into small spaces, such as under a counter. The settings and technology included in units depend upon the manufacturer, though most units include steam drying and tumble drying options.

    Dimensions

    • The dimensions of an integrated washer and dryer refer to the overall size of unit and vary depending upon the manufacturer. An integrated unit produced by Bendix, for instance, measures 23.375 inches wide, 33.25 inches high and 22 inches deep, significantly smaller than a GE unit measuring 27 inches wide, 39.75 inches high and 31.1 inches deep. To find the dimensions of any integrated washer and dryer, ask for specifics from a local retailer or visit the official website of the manufacturer.

    Capacity

    • Capacity refers to the weight or volume of clothes you can fit into an integrated washer and dryer and the amount of water the unit can hold during the wash cycle. An LG integrated unit can hold a total of eight kilograms, or approximately 17.64 pounds of clothes, and fits 65 liters, or about 17.17 gallons, of water. Bendix measures its capacity based on volume, not weight capacity, as does GE. A Pro Bendix unit fits 2.5 cubic feet of clothes at maximum capacity, while a GE unit fits 4.2 cubic feet. The weight of a cubic foot of clothing depends upon the density of the clothes.

    Weight

    • The weight of integrated washers and dryers varies depending on the size of the unit and also the density of the materials used in its construction. A GE unit measuring 27 inches wide, 39.75 inches high and 33.1 inches deep weighs 236 pounds. A Bendix unit measuring 23.375 inches wide, 33.25 inches high and 22 inches ships at a weight of 180 pounds, though the weight of the unit is actually less – shipping weight accounts for the weight of the unit and packaging. The Bendix unit weighs about 56 pounds less than the GE. LG's integrated washers and dryers weigh 72 kilograms, or about 159 pounds.
