Amana Dryer Drum Removal

Amana is an American company that manufactures large appliances for the home. An Amana clothes dryer has a drum that spins to aid in the thorough drying of your clothes. Most of the mechanical parts -- such as the igniter, motor and belt -- are mounted to the dryer chassis and are located under or behind the drum. Removal of the drum is necessary to reach most serviceable parts.
  1. Preparations

    • Unplug the dryer power cord from the wall outlet. Electrical wires will be exposed once the top and front panel have been removed from the dryer. Unplugging the power reduces the risk of electrical shock. There is no need to pull the machine from the wall. It is better to leave the machine against the wall so that when the top panel is rotated upwards it will have a place to rest against.

    Lift Top Panel

    • To be able to rotate the top panel upwards, the hidden retaining clips at the front of the panel must be disengaged. This can be done by pushing the end of a metal putty knife into the gap between the top panel and the front panel of the dyer. Pushing down on the handle of the knife will force the top panel upwards and release it from the hidden retaining clips. Repeat this action on both sides of the front panel of the dryer. Grasp the front panel under its forward edge and rotate it upwards. Lean the top panel against the wall.

    Remove Front Panel

    • Before you can remove the front panel of the dryer, you must pull the wiring connector for the door switch apart. Once this has been done, you can remove the two screws securing the top of the front panel. Rotate the top of the front panel outwards a bit, then lift the panel upwards until the tabs in the base of the panel clear the slots in the dryer chassis. You can then remove the panel from the dryer.

    Drum Brace

    • Even with the top and front panels removed, the drum is still secured to the dryer chassis by a brace. Locate the two wires at the top of the brace and pull them straight out of the wire terminals. The plastic clip that holds the wires to the brace also needs to be removed. This can be done by prying it out with a flat blade screwdriver. The four retaining screws that secure the brace to the dryer chassis can now be removed with a nut driver. Rotate the top of the brace outwards while lifting it straight up to remove it from the dryer. Now the drum can be lifted straight up and removed from the dryer.
