One of the first suspects when there is a drain problem with a Whirlpool washing machine is the drain hose. Disconnect power to the washer and then remove the drain hose from the rear of the washing machine. Inspect the hose for small items that may be blocking the flow of water and clean as needed. Reconnect the drain hose to the washing machine and keep the hose straight.
After checking the drain hose, inspect the drain standpipe for potential problems. Lower the standpipe if it's installed more than 8 feet above the floor as this can force the drain pump to work too hard to remove water from the tub. Pull the drain hose out of the stand pipe slightly to help prevent water from siphoning back into the washing machine.
Another common problem that creates drain issues is oversudsing, which is caused by the use of too much detergent. Use no more than the maximum recommended amount of detergent on the laundry detergent container or fill the detergent dispenser no more than the “Max Fill” line. Too much detergent creates extra foam and water that often cannot be drained completely during a normal cycle. Select a new “Rinse and Drain” cycle and push “Start” to finish draining the basket.
Note that the use of the “Delicate” or “Permanent Press” cycles force the pump to work harder and any potential drain issues may be exacerbated. Use the “Normal” wash cycle to help reduce the strain on the drain pump. Contact Whirlpool if the drain pump continues to fail and water remains in the tub after washing as the drain pump or the load sense switch may need to be replaced.
