How to Repair the Dampening Strap in a GE Profile Washer

If you notice your GE profile washer having a greater frequency of unbalanced loads, it might be time to repair your dampening straps. These four staps secure the washer tub to the cabinet inside, helping to keep the machine in balance. Because these dampening straps are inexpensive, the easiest way to repair them is by replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • Hex screwdrivers/socket wrench and set

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power for the GE Profile washer by unplugging it from the wall.

    • 2

Move the appliance away from the wall or other objects so you can work behind the control panel.

    • 3

Loosen the screws holding the control panel in place on the back of the machine.

    • 4

Lift the control panel off the machine hood. Some models of GE Profile washers may have a control panel that lifts up and back while in others, the control panel will slimply slide out of place. Try not to pull the control panel too quickly while moving it, as this may unplug some of the wires.

    • 5

Insert a putty knife between the lid and the front panel of the machine. Gently press backward on the putty knife to pry the front panel off the machine.

    • 6

Use a hex head wrench or socket wrench to loosen the brackets on the front of the cabinet holding the top in place.

    • 7

Gently slide the top off the GE Profile washer.

    • 8

Loosen the nut on the side of the dampening strap next to the tub. Slip the strap off the holder. Push the tub to one side with your hands, if needed, to reach the nut on the other side of the dampening strap next to the cabinet. Pull the strap off the holder.

    • 9

Slip the end of a new strap over the holder on the side adjacent to the cabinet. Secure with a screw. Slip the other end of the strap over the holder on the tub. Secure with another screw.

    • 10

Repeat the repair procedure for the other dampening straps in the GE Profile washer.

    • 11

Replace the top of the washer and secure with the brackets. Press the front of the machine back into place. Replace the control panel and secure with screws.

    • 12

Plug the GE Profile back into the wall socket.
