How to Keep Water From Freezing in a Washing Machine Sump Pump

If you store your washing machine in the winter or plan on an extended vacation, it is a good idea to take steps to prevent water from freezing inside the sump pump. A small amount of water remains in the washing machine once it finishes washing your clothes. If the water freezes inside the pump, it could cause damage to the pump seals or hoses. Keeping water from freezing in a washing machine sump pump requires some R.V. antifreeze. This type of antifreeze contains propylene glycol, which prevents water from freezing.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the handle of both water supply spigots clockwise to shut off water to the washing machine. Pull the washer far enough away from the wall so that you can access both hose connections at the rear of the unit.

    • 2

Rotate each hose connection at the rear of the washing machine counterclockwise to remove it from the unit. The connections are exactly the same as a garden hose connector. It might be necessary to use a pair of pliers to get the hose connections to turn initially.

    • 3

Push the washing machine back into its normal working position. Open the washer lid and pour 1 quart of R.V. antifreeze into the washtub. Close the washer lid.

    • 4

Turn the dial to a rinse setting and allow the washing machine to operate for 30 seconds. This distributes the antifreeze to any remaining water in the pump.

    • 5

Shut off the washing machine after 30 seconds. Unplug the washing machine power cord.
