How to Replace a Moisture Sensor on a GE Profile

When your GE Profile dryer runs too long and over-dries your clothes, it might be time to change the moisture sensor. The moisture sensor determines how much heat the dryer must produce based on the moisture in your clothes. When the sensors become faulty, the dryer heat remains at a constant temperature. Replacing a moisture sensor on a GE Profile dryer requires some disassembly of the dryer filter housing. Replacement moisture sensors are available at appliance repair shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the GE Profile dryer power cord from the dryer outlet. Open the dryer door, and pull out the lint screen at the bottom of the door opening.

    • 2

Remove the two screws securing the lint filter housing to the back of the dryer opening, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the housing away from the back of the opening until you see the two wires connecting to the moisture sensor.

    • 3

Pull the ends of the wires off the ends of the moisture sensor with your fingers. Take the entire housing out of the dryer.

    • 4

Push the two metal probes out of the filter housing with your thumbs. The two metal probes are the moisture sensor. Push two new metal probes into the front of the filter housing, with the spade terminal end pointing toward the center of the housing.

    • 5

Slide the wires onto each of the metal probes. Position the filter housing back over the inside of the door opening, and secure it with the retaining screws.

    • 6

Insert the lint screen back into the filter housing, and close the dryer door. Plug the GE Profile dryer power cord back into the outlet.
