How to Replace a Washer Belt on a Maytag Front-Load

When a Maytag front-load washer does not spin or agitate, the problem could be a broken or worn-out drive belt. The belt connects the washer motor to the washtub. As the washer motor runs, it rotates the belt and the belt rotates the tub drive pulley. This constant rotation of the belt can stretch and damage the belt. The problem can be fixed if you replace the belt on the rear of the machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Maytag from the wall receptacle. Pull the washer away from the wall to gain access to the rear of the machine.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the rear panel on the washer cabinet. Slide the rear panel up. Pull the panel from the rear of the washer cabinet to remove it and expose the tub drive pulley, washer motor and washer belt.

    • 3

Rotate the large tub drive pulley on the rear of the washtub counterclockwise with one hand. Use the other hand to pull up on the old washer belt and pull it out from the drive pulley and the motor pulley. Discard the old belt.

    • 4

Wrap the replacement front-load washer belt around the small pulley on the motor. Ensure the grooved side of the belt rests against the pulleys.

    • 5

Position the replacement belt against the tub drive pulley. Hold the belt against the pulley as you rotate the pulley counterclockwise. You must stretch the belt slightly for it to fit around and rotate the tub pulley.

    • 6

Replace the rear panel. Push the washer into its original position and plug it into the wall.
