How to Fix a Moisture Sensor Whirlpool Duet Dryer

To protect your garments from over-exposure to heat and reduce the cost of running your dryer, Whirlpool Duet dryers have a moisture sensor built into the appliance. Located inside of the lint filter housing, the sensor detects the overall moisture level contained in the air of the dryer and uses it to determine whether the clothes are still wet. Once moisture is no longer present, the dryer turns off. If the moisture sensor fails, you may notice that your dryer runs much longer than usual,and continues running after the clothes are dry. To restore your dryer, replace the moisture sensor.

Instructions

    • 1

      Move the dryer away from the wall,and then unplug the power cord.

      Remove the screws from the rear of the top panel. Remove the top panel.

      Depress the tabs on the inside of the control panel and pull the control panel off of the front of the washer. Depress the tab on the control panel wire connector securing the wire connector to the control board and then remove the wire connector.

      Remove the screws securing the circuit board bracket, and then remove the bracket.

      Remove the screws securing the control bracket, which is the bracket to which the control panel was secured. Remove the control bracket.

      Remove the screws from the bottom of the lower-front panel. Remove the panel by pulling it out and down.

      Disconnect the door switch and moisture sensor wire connectors, found on the bottom-right portion of the bottom of the dryer. Use a flat-head screwdriver to lift the tabs on each wire connector if necessary.

      Remove the four screws from the corners of the front panel. Open the dryer door and remove the mounting screws from the bottom of the door jamb. Pull the front panel off of the front of the dryer.

      Remove the mounting screws on the bottom left and right of the bulk-head. Loosen the mounting screws on the top left and right of the bulk-head. Remove the mounting screws from the blower housing, located on the bottom-left of the dryer drum. Lift the bulkhead up and remove it from the dryer.

      Place the bulk-head face down on a solid surface, and pull the lint screen out of the bottom of the bulk-head.

      Pull the two moisture sensor wires off of the bottom of the bulk-head.

      Turn over the bulk head, and then remove the mounting screws securing the outlet screen grill. Remove the outlet screen grill.

      Turn over the outlet screen grill, and then use needle-nosed pliers to squeeze the tab on the rear of the moisture sensor bar. Slide the tab through the grill to remove the moisture sensor bar.

    • 14

      Snap the new moisture sensor bar into the grill.

    • 15

      Reassemble the dryer by reversing the steps taken to disassemble it.

      Restore power to the dryer.
