How to Repair a Whirlpool Calypso Washer

The Whirlpool Calypso washing machine earns its name from the rhythmic motion of its clothing drum during the wash cycle. The machine is designed to move the clothes using the force of water, and the movement of a plate at the bottom of the clothing drum. As a result, there is a higher capacity since the agitator tower at the center of the drum has been done away with. Whirlpool manufactures a series of washers with the patented Calypso motion, all of which are top loading, and similar to Whirlpool's other washers in function and technology.

Inspect your home circuit breakers or fuses if the machine fails to turn on at all, or if there is a "PF" alert flashing on your digital display panel. Reset any tripped breakers, and replace any bad fuses. If the power supply is in order, check that the machine is plugged in all the way. Power issues may also cause the washer to stop mid-cycle.

Inspect your water supply lines if the machine fails to fill up. If the lines are folded, disconnected or damaged in any way, they may not be delivering water to the machine as needed. Repair or adjust the lines, and check that your water supply cutoff valves are both in the fully open position.

Inspect your washer drain hose if the machine fails to empty out, or the spin cycle refuses to engage. The drain hose should be inserted into the standpipe which leads to your home sewer main. Check that the hose is firmly in place, preferably tied down with a zip tie or other fastener, and that no more than 7 inches or so is set inside the standpipe. There should be sufficient space between the outside of the drain hose, and the standpipe to allow for air to pass through and pressure can adjust. Check that the bottom end of the drain hose is lower in height, than the water level inside your washing machine. If it is not, the water may not drain properly, if at all.

Inspect your water supply lines if the washer is leaking. Remove each line from the rear of the machine by grasping, and turning it in a counterclockwise motion. Inside each hose there is a rubber washer that must be set completely flat so that it seals the hose to the water inlet. Reset the washers and reinstall them on the machine.

Determine the meaning of any warnings on the machine's digital display panel. Like warning lights in your car, these automatic notices will often highlight the problem, and eliminate the need for guesswork. Review the paperwork provided with your particular Calypso model to learn what each symbol means, and how to go about correcting it.
