How To Repair an LG Washer WM0642H When the Drain and Rinse Have a Burning Smell

A burning smell in a washing machine is only caused by one thing, the drive belt. The drive belt is a thick rubber belt attached to the engine and axle of the LG WM0642H washer. When the drive belt becomes loose, it can slip and begin rubbing against the wrong part of the axle. This friction causes the burning smell. The only way to fix this problem is to replace the belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine and close the water valves leading to the washer.

    • 2

Disconnect the water hoses from the wall and slide the washing machine away from the wall.

    • 3

Unscrew the four screws securing the back access panel. There will be one in each corner of the panel. Pull the panel up and out.

Locate the belt and the two clamps holding the belt in place.

    • 5

Unscrew the clamps until the belt is loose enough to remove.

    • 6

Pull off the old belt and put the new belt on.

    • 7

Tighten the clamps until they are firmly holding the new belt in place.

Replace the back panel, slide the washing machine back in place, connect the water hoses, plug the washing machine in and turn the water supply back on.
