Unplug the washing machine’s power cord from the outlet. This protects you from injury or electrical shock while you are working on the washing machine.
Insert a putty knife’s blade into the seam between the washing machine’s lid and the cabinet or front panel. Slide the putty knife’s blade along the seam until it contacts the spring catches. Lift up on the lid to swing it back away from the cabinet.
Work the clips free from the edge of the washing machine’s tub ring by lifting up on the bottom edge of each clip. Pull up on the tub ring once you have removed all of the clips, removing the ring from the washing machine.
Twist the cap on the top of the washing machine’s agitator as you pull up on it to remove the cap. Remove the nut that sits under the cap by twisting it counterclockwise using a socket wrench. Pull up on the agitator to remove it from the shaft in the center of the tub.
Slide a spanner nut wrench over the rod in the middle of the tub, inserting it firmly into the top of the spanner nut. Turn the wrench counterclockwise by hitting its handles, loosening the spanner nut. Pull the inner tub up and out of the washing machine.
Turn the metal nuts holding the seals in the bottom of the outer tub counterclockwise with a socket wrench. Hit the drive block on the shaft in the center of the tub with a hammer to loosen the drive block, and then slide it off the shaft. Pull up on the outer drum to remove it from the shaft.
Reassemble the washing machine by reversing the steps you took, and insert the new outer and inner tubs onto the center shaft.
