How to Install an Ignitor in a Dryer

Like your oven range or home furnace, a gas dryer uses an ignitor to light the burners. This is a small metal component inside the unit. If you can't get your dryer to heat up, then you are likely looking at a faulty or broken ignitor. If you aren't intimidated by working with large home appliances, you can open up your dryer and replace the ignitor yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your dryer and shut off the gas valve at the rear of the unit.

    • 2

Locate the access panel on your dryer. This will likely be on the front of the unit.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the access panel in place and remove the access panel. You will now have access to the metal gas burner assembly inside the unit.

    • 4

Turn the valve on the gas line connected to the burner assembly clockwise to shut it off.

    • 5

Remove all screws securing the gas line to the assembly, as well as any mounting screws on the assembly.

    • 6

Slide the assembly out of the compartment and notice the ignitor mounted to the side of the burner. The ignitor is a thin rod-shaped component.

    • 7

Remove the screw holding the ignitor in place and unplug the ignitor wiring from the burner assembly.

    • 8

Fit a new ignitor on the burner assembly and replace the screw. Plug in the wiring.

    • 9

Replace the burner assembly and dryer access panel.
