How to Install a Gas Dryer Ignitor

The ignitor in a gas dryer lights the gas into a flame that warms the unit to dry clothing. Over time, the ignitor can malfunction; but since it’s a relatively inexpensive part, it’s a cheap fix. Although the process can vary, depending on the type of dryer and the ignitor, most homeowners can install a new ignitor themselves with very little trouble.

  Disconnect the gas dryer from the power source by either unplugging it or turning off the power at the circuit breaker box. Turn off the gas valve to the dryer.

  Open the access panel on the dryer. This location can vary, but it’s typically in the front of the unit. Disconnect the burner assembly from both the gas valve and the dryer by removing the screws that hold each one in place.

  Disconnect the two wires that secure the ignitor to the burner assembly by gently tugging on the connectors. Remove the screw that holds the ignitor in place, take out the ignitor and set it aside.

  Screw the new ignitor in place in the burner assembly. Connect the two wires between the burner assembly and the new ignitor.

  Replace the burner assembly in the dryer and tighten the screws back into place, including the ones that connect it to the gas valve and the dryer. Close the access panel and connect the gas and power back to the unit.
