How to Remove the Clutch From a Maytag Performa

The clutch on the Maytag Performa washing machine is a simple part that performs an important function. It controls the function of the agitator. When it fails, the washing machine will not complete its cycle properly. This does not mean that you have to run out and purchase a new washer. You simply need to replace the clutch. Removing the clutch from the washing machine is not difficult. The average do-it-yourselfer can complete the project in about 30 minutes.

Remove the drain hose from the machine using the channel-lock pliers to release the hose clamp. Open the washer, and remove the rinse dispenser by pulling up on the locking clamp and lifting the dispenser from the agitator. Pry the cap from the agitator using a flat-tip screwdriver. Remove the inner dust cap by pulling it out if one is present.
