How to Set the Tension on a GE Dryer Belt

General Electric offers a wide range of dryers that are designed to meet the needs of residential customers. GE dryers employ a rubber belt to rotate the drum. The belt component is set to the appropriate tension at the factory. If the belt were to come free of its track or after the installation of a replacement, the tension must be reset accurately for the drum to continue to spin properly. Setting the tension on a GE dryer belt requires no experience.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. Close the gas supply valve before troubleshooting or replacing GE gas dryer belts.

    • 2

Slide a putty knife along the bottom edge of the top dryer panel to find the two retaining clips. Press firmly on the clips with the tip of the putty knife until they release. Fold the top panel back to rest against the wall behind the appliance.

    • 3

Open the door to reveal the four Phillips screws that secure the front panel to the dryer cabinet. Find two additional Phillips screws along the top edge of the front panel. Remove the six Phillips screws and reserve them for reassembly.

    • 4

Lift the front panel up and tilt it toward you to access the door switch wiring. Pull firmly on the wire connectors with needle-nose pliers to detach them from their terminals. Lean the removed front panel against the side of the dryer.

    • 5

Inspect the dryer belt for damage. Replace the belt if the current one is worn, cracked or broken. Slip the replacement belt around the dryer drum and guide it into the belt track.

    • 6

Find the idler and motor pulleys below the drum, on the left side of the dryer cabinet. Hook the belt around the motor pulley. Pull the idler pulley to the left and move the belt into the idler pulley track. Release the idler pulley to set the belt tension.
