How to Remove the Agitator in an Admiral Washer That Is Leaking Grease

Admiral top-loading washing machines, which are manufactured by Whirlpool, have an agitator that is located in the center of the washtub. The agitator is installed on top of the drive shaft, which is connected to the washer's motor. As the motor spins, it rotates the drive shaft, which in turn rotates the agitator, moving the clothes in the washtub. If the drive shaft is damaged, or the seal fails, you may notice grease leaking from the agitator. This grease may damage your garments, so when it is detected, you must discontinue use of the washer until the drive shaft is repaired. When removing the drive shaft, one of the first steps is to remove the agitator.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Open the washer lid, and then remove the agitator cap using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3

Lift the dust cap out of the agitator shaft.

    • 4

Remove the agitator bolt at the bottom of the agitator using a socket wrench. The socket wrench itself will not reach the agitator bolt, so an extension arm must be attached to the end of the wrench.

    • 5

Lift the agitator up and out of the washing machine.
