How to Install a Drain Pump on a Frigidaire Washing Machine

Frigidaire is a name synonymous with lines of refrigerators and freezers, but the company also manufacturers other appliances as well, such as washing machines. Like nearly any manmade appliance though, the machines aren’t without their share of maintenance issues, some of which can be handled by the savvy do-it-yourselfer. Replacing the drain pump is one such instance.

Instructions

Shut off the water line leading directly to the machine or, if need be, to your home. Unplug the machine from its wall receptacle for safety’s sake. Pull the Frigidaire washer out from the wall enough to create a workspace and allow you to gain unhampered access to the machine’s access panel, located on the bottom backside facing the wall.

Unscrew and remove the three to four holding screws -- the amount depends on the fridge model -- using a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the loose panel and set it aside. Locate the drain pump, which generally speaking is right in front of you – it’s the piece that features two distinct drain lines running to either side of it. Slide a plastic bucket directly underneath the drain pump and have a clean dry towel handy; once you disconnect the lines, standing water is sure to spill out. If desired, lay a towel or two underneath the bucket to catch excess water that may splash out of the bucket.

Detach each connecting water line one at a time and give each a few seconds to drain into the bucket. Once done, unscrew the sole holding screw that anchors the pump to the washing machine’s assembly and give gentle tug to remove the old pump. Discard it. Slide the new pump into place where the old one rested but first connect each water line. Doing so makes adjusting the pump’s position much easier.

Screw the holding screw back into place and wiggle the pump some to get it to adjust snugly into place. Remove the towels and bucket. Replace the rear access panel cover and screw it into place and then turn on the water supply to the machine. Run the machine through a cycle to check to see if the basin is filling correctly and there’s no leakage from the back.
