How to Install a GE Washer Control Knob

The control knobs on GE washing machines all screw on to threaded posts extending from the control panel, with the exception of the cycle control knob, which attaches differently. Knobs may occasionally wear out or break if struck by a sharp, glancing blow. Replacement knobs are available from GE and appliance parts retailers. Installing a new knob takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the GE power cord from the wall.

    • 2

Pull the cycle control knob until it clicks.

    • 3

Grab the C-shaped lock clip between the cycle knob on the control panel with needle nose pliers. The clip is mounted on the metal shaft and locks the knob in place. Pull straight back on the clip to remove it.

    • 4

      Slide off the old knob.

    • 5

Place the clip on the groove in the metal shaft and hold it with the pliers.

    • 6

Push the new knob onto the shaft until it engages the clip, then press the knob to the "Off" position.

    • 7

Unscrew and remove any other control knobs you wish to replace on the washer.

    • 8

Twist a new knob onto each threaded metal shaft clockwise until tight.
