How to Troubleshoot a GE Profile Washer/Dryer in Demo Mode

GE Profile washers and dryers are consumer-grade appliances that feature a primarily digital control panel. As you use the washer and dryer, you can encounter a problem with the panel showing the “DEMO” message on the LCD screen. When you experience this, there is no need to call a service technician as you can clear the Demo mode on your own.
  1. Demo Mode Purpose

    • The "Demo" mode is intended to be utilized by an appliance sales professional. This mode enables a salesperson to show a potential customer a sample cycle. The Demo mode is not intended for home use. In fact, you will not be able to complete a wash or dry cycle if the unit is stuck in Demo mode.

    Causes

    • The primary way that the unit will go into the Demo mode is if that mode is selected. To select the mode, the “My Cycles” and “Home” button must be pressed at the same time and held for 30 seconds. Once this occurs, the unit goes into full Demo mode. In some instances, a power surge can kick the unit into the Demo mode as well.

    Preventing

    • Making sure that you do not press the “Home” and “My Cycles” buttons at the same time is the best way to prevent ending up in the Demo mode. If you are concerned about a teen or someone else in the house inadvertently putting the unit in Demo mode, you can put a note above the unit for everyone to see.

    Fixing

    • Pushing the “Home” and “My Cycles” button at the same time will clear the unit out of the demo mode. You need to hold the two buttons for three seconds for it to go into effect. If you have problems getting it out of Demo mode with this method, another option is power cycling by disconnecting the washer/dryer from the power source. Once you unplug it from the wall outlet, give it 60 seconds before reconnecting to the wall outlet. Once reconnected, it should no longer be in Demo mode. If the dryer still does not get out of the Demo mode, disconnect the power again. This time, you must also leave the door open when you reconnect the power and then push the “Start/Pause” button five times immediately upon reconnecting the power.
