Issues With Maytag Electric Dryers With Electronic Controls

Maytag dryers with electronic controls offer a program status monitor, a moisture sensor and cycle modifiers for specific fabrics or items, as well as an air fluff option. The electronic display panel shows the current cycle and any relevant error messages. Troubleshooting problems with the Maytag dryer can be useful if the cause of the problem is not immediately evident.
  1. Power and Heat

    • If the Maytag dryer is not working and there is nothing illuminated on the electronic control panel, check the power cord and plug the cord into a grounded three-prong plug. Should the power cord be fully connected already, look to see if a fuse or circuit breaker needs to be replaced or reset. Dryers use two circuit breakers or fuses and one may blow or trip, leaving the dryer without power or adequate heat.

    Drying Results

    • When the dryer seems to be running for a long period of time or clothes are still damp when the cycle is finished, make sure you are not overloading the dryer with too many items. Clean the lint screen each time the dryer is used and check the exhaust vent for debris or lint that may be blocking the airflow. Wipe the sensor bars in the dryer with a clean cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol if the sensor dry cycles are not operating as expected. Let the bars dry completely before drying another load.

    Sound

    • Some sound is to be expected when any dryer is in use, including the Maytag dryer. If there is a rattling or clicking sound, look for small objects inside the drum like coins or buttons. A thumping sound may indicate that clothes have tangled together and need to be separated in order to dry properly and stop the noise. If the dryer is vibrating or moving when in use, check and adjust the legs on the dryer until all legs touch the ground firmly to reduce vibration.

    Error Messages

    • When a problem has occurred, an error code often shows up on the electronic display. “PF” indicates a recent power failure that interrupted a cycle. Make sure the door is shut and press “Start/Pause” to resume and finish the cycle. The “L2” error code means that there is a power supply problem. Check the power cord and replace or reset the fuse or circuit breaker, then press any key to clear the error code. Choose a new cycle and select “Start/Pause” to begin. The “AF” error code indicates an airflow problem. Clean the lint screen and exhaust vent, then choose a timed dry cycle and restart the dryer. If the error code is “F” accompanied by a number variable, service by Maytag is needed.
