The Signal Doesn't Work on the Series 70 Dryer

Kenmore Series 70 dryers have a signal or timer that advances through a drying cycle. If the signal on your dryer doesn’t work, the dryer will operate inefficiently and clothes won’t dry properly. Since a signal could malfunction for any number of reasons, it’s helpful to know what to look for to make diagnosing and potentially solving the problem easier.
  1. Air Fluff

    • A signal won’t activate on a Kenmore Series 70 dryer that’s set for Air Fluff. This cycle tumbles clothes without heat to prevent clothes from wrinkling, typically after a heated cycle setting ends. Make sure the cycle selector knob on the control panel is set on either a timed drying cycle or an automatic dampness-sensing cycle.

    Automatic Dry

    • If the signal on your Series 70 dryer doesn’t work in automatic dry, verify that it works in a timed dry setting. If the signal advances on timed dry, the dryer most likely isn’t heating properly, or the problem could be electrical. A signal will advance during an automatic dry setting only when the thermostat in the drum confirms the air temperature has reached a threshold suitable for drying. Contact Kenmore to have a technician evaluate the dryer’s thermostats to ensure they work right and make any repairs that are needed. If the thermostats are fine, you’ll want to have the technician certify that the dryer’s heating elements are operating properly.

    Electrical

    • If the signal progresses in timed mode and you’ve ruled out a thermostat or heating problem, an electrical component on the signal might lack connectivity. The issue could be with the automatic mode’s wire, heating circuit or resistor. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to pinpoint the component without performing a diagnostic test on your dryer. Contact Kenmore to schedule a service appointment. A technician will be able to run a diagnostic test and replace the worn component.

    Motor Timer

    • Sometimes a Series 70 dryer's timer motor could stop working. When this happens, the signal won’t advance in timed dry or automatic dry mode. Although the dryer will tumble and heat, you will be unable to know when the cycle ends and clothes are dry without stopping the dryer and retrieving items to determine their dampness. Obtain a new timer motor directly from Kenmore or from an appliance parts store that sells Kenmore parts. Kenmore will provide you with instructions on how to switch out the part, or you can request that a Kenmore-certified technician does it for you to ensure it’s done correctly.
