My GE Profile Is Peeling

GE Profile front-loading machines generally will last for many years without any problems. However, if the washer's paint is scratched at some point — for instance, during moving — rust may begin to appear on its surface. This can cause the paint on the washer to bubble, peel and flake off the unit. If left alone, the paint will continue to peel. Repainting the washer will prevent the problem from getting worse.
  1. Causes of Rust

    • Determine the reason for the rust on the washing machine before you repaint it. Keeping the washer in a moist place such as a basement may cause rust problems to occur. Look over the entire GE washer for signs of scratches that may allow rust to appear. Moving the washer to a new location may prevent rust from reappearing on the washer.

    Preparing the Washer

    • Pull out the washer from the wall and set it on a sheet of plastic. Plastic will prevent paint from getting onto the floor and will catch any peeling paint for easier cleanup. You need the washer in an area where you can reach all sides of the unit. Carefully tape off the parts of the washing machine you are not painting to prevent overspray.

    Priming the Washer

    • Removal off all the rust and peeling paint is necessary before repainting your GE Profile. Scrape peeling paint from the unit, using a putty knife. Once the paint is removed, the rust is next. Scrape the rust off the unit, using fine steel wool, until the bare metal shows through. Spray the washer with a rust-proof primer, which is available from most hardware stores, to cover up any remaining rust and to prevent rust from appearing in the future.

    Painting

    • Take some pieces of paint from the machine to a hardware store to find a matching color. If you can't match it exactly, it may be worth stripping the entire washer of its paint. Spray the surface of the washer evenly, holding the can several inches from the surface to prevent the paint from dripping. Keep the can of spray paint moving to prevent drips as well. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before you remove the masking tape and push the washer back in place.
