Removing Fan Blades from the Motor Shaft in a Whirlpool Dryer

Accessing the motor on a Whirlpool clothes dryer requires removing the fan blade wheel from the motor shaft. The fan blades circulate heated air through the drum and through the exhaust. Once you remove the cabinet or access panel to the Whirlpool dryer motor, the fan blade wheel faces you and is surrounded by a housing. Disassembling the housing is necessary to access the fan blade wheel and remove the fan blades from the motor shaft.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the wires from the thermostats on the rear of the fan blade housing if the Whirlpool dryer model uses the thermostats on the blower housing instead of the heating can. Instead of simply pulling on the wires, use your fingers to grab the wires' ends where they connect to the thermostat terminals.

Remove the screws securing the housing to the bottom of the dryer frame. The task requires using a nut driver. Usually two screws are on the front and at least one screw is on the rear of the housing, depending on the Whirlpool model.

    • 3

Grab the top of the housing with your fingers, and pull it forward. Lift the housing up slightly, and pull it away from the dryer.

    • 4

Place a wrench on the nut that is on the motor shaft behind the fan blade wheel. Turn the motor shaft with the wrench clockwise until the end of the wrench is against the bottom dryer frame. This task locks the motor shaft in place.

Find the bolt securing the fan blade wheel to the motor shaft, and turn it clockwise with a socket wrench. Because the bolt is a left-hand thread, turning it clockwise is necessary. Remove the bolt from the motor shaft. Pull the fan blade wheel away from the motor shaft.
