Pump Basics

• The pump on a Frigidaire washer pushes water from the wash basket and out the drain to accelerate the draining process. On this particular model, the pump has an electric-powered arm or pulley that moves up and down to force water from the washer.

Normal Pump Sounds

• It’s not unusual for a pump on a Frigidaire front-load washer to make some noise when it’s working. During the drain cycle, you might hear swishing noises as the pump pushes water out the drain hose connected to the wash basket. Additionally, you might hear a faint hum when the pump comes on that could persist until all of the water has drained. Once the basket is empty of water, any noises made by the pump should stop. Slurping, Gurgling and Sucking Sounds

• Aside from water that’s slow to leave the wash basket or not draining at all, a pump will make slurping, gurgling and sucking sounds when it’s obstructed, states Frigidaire. Although front-load washers are designed to keep laundry away from the pump, sometimes a small item can get into the outer basket and reach the pump where it chokes the pump’s operation. Once this happens, you’re only recourse is to drain the washer from a hose in back and remove the laundry inside, so you can try to remove the clog.

Clog Removal

• It’s not very easy to remove a clog due to the pump’s location. To fully access it, you must remove the wash basket. However, you might be able to remove a minor blockage if you catch the problem before the lost item has a chance to fully wrap around the pump and really get stuck. Remove the top and rear panels of the washer. Once off, search for the black drain hose that join to the basket and leads to a portal and detach it. Shine a flashlight into the portal to illuminate the entry way; just pass this point is where you’ll find the pump. Use either your fingers or a pair of pliers to reach through the portal and remove the lost laundry item if you can. If you don’t see anything in the portal, the blockage has likely fully enveloped the pump and will probably require a more involved removal process best left for the pros.
