I Found Water in My Duet Washer When It Was Not in Use

The Whirlpool Duet washing machine uses water in a variety of wash temperatures, specific wash cycles such as hand washables or heavy-duty cleaning, and extra rinse. However, water can appear in the washing machine tub when not in use because of a few possible problems with the Whirlpool Duet.
  1. Water Hoses

    • Check the water hoses for an obstruction that is causing a leak if water is entering the washer when not in use. Disconnect the water hoses at the washing machine connection, and clean out the inlet screens on the hose and the washing machine. Verify that a rubber washer is inside each hose, and then reconnect and straighten out the hoses. This will allow water to flow normally during the wash cycle.

    Drain Hose

    • Look at the positioning of the drain hose in the standpipe if water comes back into the washing machine after the drain cycle. If the drain hose is more than 8 inches in the standpipe, water cannot drain properly. Use a u-shape drain hose form, available through Whirlpool, to establish the correct positioning of the drain hose or pull the drain hose up slightly from the standpipe.

    Water Inlet Valve

    • The water inlet valve, which is inside the washer behind the water hoses, opens and closes to allow water to enter the washer as necessary. If the valve is broken, water may leak and enter the washing machine even if the washer is not in use. If you hear water dripping in the basket when the washer is turned on or a fair amount of water is inside the washer when you open the door or lid, the water inlet valve may be to blame. The water inlet valve will have to be repaired or replaced.

    Water Level Switch

    • A switch in the washing machine monitors the water level that enters the washing machine tub. If the switch is defective, the water often does not get shut off properly, which leads to overflowing. The water level switch is a small device attached near the bottom of the outer tub. As water enters the tub, the air pressure increases and activates the switch at a certain level. Defects in the switch can allow water to enter at the wrong time or at the wrong level. The water level switch will need to be replaced.
