How to Fit a Washing Machine Bearing

Washing machine bearings hold the the drum to the unit and help with the turning of the drum. The squeaking or whining noises an older washer makes is often attributed to worn bearings. In such cases, you must fit a new bearing for your unit. The process may vary by washing machine model. Essentially, however, you dissemble the washer to expose the bearing support and insert a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power from your washing machine by turning off the electricity at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Remove the main top and the front panel of the washing machine by using the screwdriver to disengage the clips that hold the parts in place. Set the parts aside, remembering that they may still be connected to the unit via wiring.

    • 3

Reach into the belt assembly and hold the pulley with one hand. Use your other hand to roll the belt off the pulley. Pull sharply on the belt to release it from the drum. Remove the drum and set it aside.

    • 4

Remove the screws that hold the rear bearing you just exposed to the unit. Slide the old bearing out of the support and slide the new bearing in. Add some high temperature lubricant if necessary. Reattach the support to the back of the unit.

    • 5

Replace the drum and the belt on the unit. Replace the front panel and the main top on the unit. Restore power to the unit.
