How to Troubleshoot the Kenmore Calypso Washer Outlet Filter

If there is water left in the tub of your Calypso washer, it is a good idea to troubleshoot the washer outlet filter to determine the cause of the problem. When the water doesn't drain it is usually a sign that the outlet filter of the pump is clogged or the pump itself is faulty. The outlet filter is part of the water pump body. Troubleshooting the Kenmore Calypso washer outlet filter requires some disassembly of the washing machine cabinet.

Instructions

  1. Accessing the Water Pump

    • 1

Unplug the Whirlpool Calypso power cord and turn off the water supply spigots on the wall. Pull the washing machine away from the wall so you have room to allow the top panel to raise back.

    • 2

Pry the Calypso emblem on the front of the washing machine off with a flat-head screwdriver. The emblem covers a T20 Torx screw. Remove the screw with a Torx driver.

    • 3

Grab the sides of the Calypso top panel and pull the top panel forward to disconnect it from the front cabinet latch. Lift the front of the top panel and rotate it to the rear of the washing machine.

    • 4

Remove the four screws on the top edge of the front panel with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the top of the front panel to disengage the tabs from the front of the side panels. Move the front panel out of the way.

    • 5

Bail out any remaining water in the tub with a cup and bucket.

    Troubleshooting the Outlet Filter

    • 6

Place a shallow container under the two hoses connecting to the water pump. The water pump is under the tub on the right side. With a pair of slip-joint pliers, grab the two protruding tabs on the clamps securing each hose to the pump. Squeeze the tabs together with the pliers and pull the hose from the pump. Repeat for the opposite hose. Some water will come out of the hoses, but just enough to fill the shallow pan.

Feel inside each port on the pump where the hoses connect for small items of clothing or clogs with your fingers. The outlet filter is the port to the drain hose going out of the back of the washer. Often if the washing machine spins but does not drain, there is a clog inside the port. If debris is present, pull it out with your fingers.

Check the drain hose for clogs if the outlet filter port is clear. The hose connects to the back of the washer with a clamp like the hoses to the pump. Disconnect the drain hose from the washing machine and pull the other end of the house drain pipe near the water supply valves. Take the hose outside and run water through it with a garden hose to ensure it is clear. Reconnect the drain hose.

Disconnect the pump motor wiring harness. The harness connector simply pulls off the motor. The pump motor is next to the pump. Pry up the two clips securing the pump to the pump motor with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the pump out of the washer.

    • 10

Turn the pump over and attempt to turn the spindle on the bottom of the pump. If the spindle does not turn freely, replace the pump. The spindle helps direct drain water through the outlet filter. A siezed spindle requires full pump replacement, because it does not allow water flow into the pump to allow the recirculation check ball to move from the outlet filter port..

Reassemble the Calypso washing machine in the reverse order of the disassembly process.
