How to Replace Kenmore Front Loader Bearings

The spinning of the tub in your washing machine is essential to the appliance's function, and the bearing assemblies make it possible. If your Kenmore front-load washing machine is making squeaking or grinding noise while in use, there may be a problem with your bearings. Replacing the bearings means disassembling the unit to access the tank and replacing the bearing assemblies. The process can vary greatly depending on what model of Kenmore front loader you’re working on, but regardless of model, essentially you’re just replacing old parts with new ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the Kenmore washer at the circuit breaker to mitigate risk of electrocution or injury while performing the repair.

    • 2

Remove the tank from the front-loader washer, which varies depending on the model of Kenmore washer you have. Refer to your service manual if you’re unsure of how to get the tank out of the unit.

    • 3

Remove the front half of the tank assembly by lifting it off the tank, taking care because it’s heavy. Remove the back half of the tank assembly from the drum.

    • 4

Use a screwdriver to pop the seal out of the center of the rear tank assembly. Use an extension tool and a mallet to dislodge the rear bearing. Turn the rear tank assembly around and do the same to the front bearing.

    • 5

Use the same mallet technique to pound in the new front bearing, using a wooden block to protect the front bearing from damage. Do the same to the new rear bearing. Set the new seal in place and set it using the mallet and the wooden block again.

    • 6

Reassemble the rear tank assembly, the front tank assembly and the tub. Place the tank back into your appliance. Restore power to the unit. Use as desired.
