How to Repair a Hoover Washer

Verify the washer is getting power if the machine won't turn on. Check the plug to make sure it is plugged in and then check the outlet itself to see if it is working properly. If the outlet isn't working, check the breaker box to see if a breaker shut off.

Examine the latch on the washing machine door. The washer won't turn on if the door is open and if the latch is broken, the machine thinks the door is always open even when it's not. If the latch is broken, it requires professional care because trying to fix it yourself can permanently damage your washer. The door itself is replaced by unscrewing the door from the frame and screwing a new one into the hinges. Unplug the washing machine before attempting any repairs on it to prevent electrical accident.

Inspect the hoses going into the washer to check for leaks. Replace any hoses that are leaking or look corroded. If a hose is kinked, the washer may not get proper water flow. Straighten out the hose.

Verify the water valves going to the washer are fully open if the washer isn't getting enough water. Open the valve if it is closed.

Unscrew the filter cover from under the kickplate at the front of the washer with a screwdriver and clean or replace it. A damaged or dirty filter interferes with the washer operating correctly.

Open the access panel near the bottom of the machine to check the pump. Some models have the access panel in the back. Other models may require you to tilt the whole machine backward on a jack to access the pump fully. Check your manual. Unplug the water hose and fish out any loose change or debris that may have accumulated that prevents the pump from working properly.

Use a wrench to unbolt the pump from its housing if the pump itself is leaking or faulty. Pull the hoses off and slide the pump out, removing the belt in the process. Install a new pump so the pump level slides into the agitator slot and the pump pulley aligns with the belt.
