How to Build a Cover to Hide Washing Machine in My Kitchen

Measure the washing machine and record its height, width and depth. Add an extra inch to all your measurements so the cabinet does not fit around the washing machine too tightly.

Cut 1/2-inch thick plywood according to the measurements you took. For example, if your washing machine is 39 inches tall, 27 inches wide and 30 inches deep, you will need piece of plywood that measures 28-by-31 inches for the top of the cabinet, 28-by-40 inches for the front of the cabinet and two pieces that measure 31-by-40 inches for the sides. The back of the cabinet will remain open to accommodate the pipes and allow airflow.

Cut the piece of plywood that is for the front of the cabinet. Cut off the bottom 2 inches so the piece of wood is 2 inches shorter. This length of plywood will help support the cabinet frame and make it so the cabinet doors do not drag on the floor while opening. When using the example measurements, you will cut the 28-by-40 inch sheet of wood so it measures 28-by-38 inches, and you are left with a 2-by-28-inch strip of wood. Then, cut the taller piece of wood in half vertically so you can make two doors. If the sheet of wood measures 28-by-38 inches, for example, cutting it in half will give you two pieces of plywood that measure 14-by-38 inches.

Sand all the pieces of wood so the edges are smooth.

Connect the two pieces of plywood that are for the sides of the cabinet to the sheet of wood that is for the top of the cabinet. Place a bead of glue along the side edge of the plywood that will form the top of the cabinet and press the side of one of the side-sheets of plywood. The top edge of the side of the cabinet should be flush with the top part of the cabinet. Repeat this process with the remaining piece of plywood that forms the side of the cabinet. Secure the pieces of plywood in place with nails spaced 2 inches apart.

Attach the 2-inch tall strip of plywood to the front of the cabinet. Use a bead of glue on either edge of the strip of wood and slide it into place so the front of the strip is flush with the side edges of the cabinet. Use two nails on both sides to secure the strip of wood in place.

Add the trim to the sides of the cabinet. Cut the 2-by-2 lumber into four pieces that are the same height of your cabinet. Sand the edges of the lumber so they are smooth, apply a bead of glue to the flat end of the plywood and attach it to the sides of the cabinet. The trim should be flush with the front and back edges of the plywood. Secure the trim in place with nails spaced 4 inches apart. The trim on the front of the cabinet will help support the door hinges. The back trim is simply there to create a balanced look.

Install the cabinet doors. Attach cabinet door hinges onto the side edges of plywood that form the cabinet doors. Place the hinges an inch from the bottom and top of the doors. Use screws to secure the hinges to the doors. Hold one of the cabinet doors in place and secure the hinges to the side of the cabinet with screws. Repeat this process with the other door.

Paint the cabinet in the color of your choice.

Install the knobs to the front of the cabinet doors.

Slide the cabinet over the washing machine to conceal it in your kitchen.
