How to Install a Water Pump on a GE Washing Machine

The water pump on a GE washing machine recirculates water during the agitate and rinse cycles and pumps the water from the drain at the end of the two spin cycles. Two chambers on the pump perform different functions. One is responsible for pumping water out of the drain and the other recirculates the water. You need to replace your water pump on your GE washing machine when the seal around the shaft on the pump fails. You know the seal has failed when water leaks out of the pump onto the floor.
  1. Preparation

    • Before you begin working on your GE washing machine’s water pump, you need to remove as much water from the machine as possible. To do this, you need to run the machine in the drain cycle. This will drain the machine. Once the machine is drained, unplug it from the wall to make sure you do not electrocute yourself during repair. To give yourself more room to work on the water pump, pull the washing machine away from the wall and unplug the hoses on the back of the washer.

    Old Pump Removal

    • To replace the water pump on your washing machine, you will need to remove the old water pump. Begin by removing the access panel on the back of the washer with a screwdriver. Then, remove the pump coupler by removing the clamp that holds it in place. You will need a ¼-inch nut driver to remove the clamp. You will remove the hoses that go to the two chambers on the water pump. Two hoses run to each chamber. Take note of the placement of each hose before you remove the clamps that hold them in place. Also be prepared for water to run out of the hoses when you disconnect them. Use a pair of hose clamp pliers to push the clamps on the hoses back and pull them away from the water pump. Then remove the three screws that hold the water pump to the tub by using a socket wrench.

    New Pump Installation

    • Place the new pump where the old one was and attach the three screws that hold it in place on the tub. Next, replace the four pump hoses in their respective places and pull the coupling clamps back down to finish connecting the hoses. Once the new water pump is in place, replace the access panel on the back of the washing machine using a screwdriver to hold it in place. Reattach the hoses to the back of the washing machine if you removed them earlier for easier access.

    Test the New Pump

    • Now that you have replaced the water pump on your machine, you need to test it to make sure it works properly. Begin by running the washing machine through a full cycle with no clothes in the drum. If the machine runs through an entire cycle without leaking, then you have installed the unit properly. If your washing machine is still leaking water from the water pump, make sure you have attached all of the hoses to the pump tightly and accurately.
